Austin, TX (January 13, 2017) – Tianna Flores, vice president of design at Hellas Construction, just earned her certification for track building (CTB) by the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA). She is one of only two women in the United States to hold such certification in an industry that is predominantly men.

“We are always proud to add another certified sports builder to our staff,” President/CEO Reed J. Seaton said. “Tianna is a great asset to our company.”

Flores has worked for Hellas Construction for nearly seven years, starting with the company back in 2010, as a receptionist, while continuing her education and earning her Bachelor of Science in Construction Technology from Texas State University.

“I’ve always loved science and math,” Flores said. She originally planned to major in chemistry and minor in math, but was encouraged by one of the campus professors to get in the construction field because of her skills and abilities. “I was one of the only females in many of my classes,” Flores said. “I think it really pushed me to work harder.” After graduating, she moved into the design department at Hellas Construction and started working on computer drafting and design. She worked with Seaton, and Vice President Matt Schnitzler, on design-build sports projects. Both encouraged her to pursue certification in track and to continue certification in other programs.

To earn ASBA certification candidates are required to have a certain amount of experience on specific types of track construction projects. The experience is necessary to apply for the examination. Candidates must then pass the four-hour comprehensive exam on track construction, surfacing, design, administration, and renovation. “Without my experience at Hellas, there is no way I could have passed the test,” Flores said. She attributes her success to the great amount of knowledge Seaton, Schnitzler, and the staff at Hellas has shared with her. Her hard work and dedication has continued to elevate her within the company. Flores was recently promoted to vice president of design in the Design Build Group.

The ASBA certification programs were developed to help raise professional standards and to improve the practice of sports construction. It assists the general public in evaluating experience and expertise and distinguishes those who have met a designated level of experience and demonstrated amount of knowledge. Becoming certified can also prequalify a candidate for a project. Some school districts restrict bidding for projects to companies that employ ASBA certified professionals.
