Natural Grass Athletic Fields

In addition to synthetic turf fields Hellas Construction builds and installs highly engineered natural grass fields. NFL teams with rigorous standards for their playing surfaces choose Hellas for their engineered natural grass fields. Those partners include the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders who installed engineered natural grass practice fields. Natural grass athletic fields require dense, thick sod, able to withstand impact, recover quickly, and come back for more. Our skilled crews will use specialized high-tech equipment and consult with renowned agronomist to install your new turf quickly and dependably. Natural grass costs less for the initial installation but offers limited hours for usage and increased maintenance cost.

Sod System

The standard sod system is comprised of 4 layers; Compacted Subgrade, Drainage, Sand and finally the Sod. The compacted subgrade is the most critical stage of installation for athletic fields. The drainage layer between the subsoil and the modified soil facilitates water movement from internal drainage to the perimeter. Th sand layer will vary from 4 to 12 inches is depth. Fertilizers and other ingredients such at peat will be added to ensure proper root growth of the sod which is the final layer. There are a wide variety of local grasses and hybrid systems that can be grown in advance, delivered to the site, and grown in quite quickly.

Sod Installation Process:

1. Compact Subgrade
Solid basework ensures that the underground does not become uneven.
2. Laser Grade with 3D Scan
3D scan a surface with metrological accuracy.
3. Subsurface Drainage
Ensure excellent surface drainage without interfering with play.
4. Irrigation Installation
Level ground 1-2 inches below sprinkler heads.
5. Base Material Installation
4 inches of fine gravel that provide porosity and stability.
6. Laser Grade 3d Scan
Lateral / horizontal super flat scanners are set up on 4 corners of an area.
7. Sand Installation
Uniform coarse sand is very effective.
8. Water Settlement
Irrigate with a sprinkler to help settle the soil.
9. Laser Grade 3d Scan
Laser scans 1 square inch increments with over 1 million elevation shots for conformance.
10. Sod Installation
Longer and wider rolls of sod will minimize the amount of seams in the installed field.
11. Watering
Thorough watering during the first 48 hours is crucial.
12. Completed Field
The finished sod field is ready for play within weeks.
